The Monkey...

Ningyo Monkey - Colored Pencil (8" x 10") 2006

This is the second entry (more of a testing really) since I have yet to publicize. This combines two of my favorite things into one bundle. Animals and the color red...as I explained before I'm drawn to the red in my work and drawn to it in others' works.
For this work I worked at a lighter touch. It struck me, as I started this drawing, how delicate the props seem for this Japanese Monkey. The Rising Sun symbol which nearly overweighs its paper thin home, the fan lightly held in his right hand and the fragile set of bells in his left. I just couldn't bear to press hard.

Here We Go With The Red...

St. Mary's Church - Colored Pencil (8" x 10") 2006

When I first started to draw as a child I was, like most other children, fascinated with color. I've had my favorite color periods throughout my life, including an awful lemon yellow stage when I was 7 to 9 years old and an equally dreadful black phase in my late teens, but one color remained consistently on my hot list and that was Chinese red. Most of my lust for the glories of red may be due to 20 plus years of drawing neutral and earthy canine, feline and equine portraits but the rest is as it is...love.
Oh, I do hold dear one bright yellow favorite from all those years ago but only in lemon meringue pie form.

St. Mary's Church is the first work I share with you here. It is not the first I've done and it most certainly will not be the last.

Picasso & Chagall Stolen

Only a short distance from my home two thieves (caught on a surveillance camera) broke into Modern Masters Fine Arts Gallery
(Palm Desert, CA) and within two minutes had made off with Pablo Picasso's linoleum cut Femme Regardant par la Fenêtre and Marc Chagall's lithograph Twelve Maquettes of Stained Glass Windows forJerusalemm: The Tribe of Dan which mirrors one of the twelve stained-glass windows he created for Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.

One of the owner's of the gallery, Michael Gudelauski, said that the gallery had procured the two works of art in June of 2005, only 6 months ago. The two pieces are worth about $100,000.
A sporty late model Mercedes was seen in the area.

The works would be difficult to sell on the open market, art thefts are rather rare because of their high profile but thieves persist regardless. The more incredible theft of the 2.5 ton Henry Moore sculpture, Reclining Figure (1970), on December15th has experts reeling. Authorities say that a crane and a lorry (coincidentally a Mercedes) were used to abscond with the $5.3 million dollar sculpture.

Someone is getting some expensive Christmas gifts this year.
