More Local Stuff

Today the Palm Springs Museum of Art acquired 543 photographs as a gift from an anonymous donor. The photographs range from the mid 19th centurey through to the late 20th century and includes photos from Eugene Atget, Harry Callahan, Julia Margaret Cameron, Lyonel Feininger, Francis Frith, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston.

Currently there is an exhibit of Palm Springs' Modernist Architecture images by Julius Shulman, through May 4. Palm Springs boasts one of the largest collections of Modernist Architecture in the world.

Also on tap for exhibition is the much anticipated Robert Mapplethorpe photographic portraits coming in January of 2009.

The Palm Springs Art Museum has well over 50,000 photographic images in it's collection, 30,000 of which are celebrity oriented, 18,000 of which are desert landscape. We (appreciators) are looking forward much more varied collections in the future.

Dungeon Master Supreme - Gary Gygax RIP

Gary Gygax, co-creator of the highly popular role playing game Dungeons & Dragons passed away today. He was 69 years old.



In addition to being one of the fathers of D&D, Gygax initiated the first GenCon in 1967 (at his home) with 100 people attending.



He is survived by his wife and six children...as well as his D&D co-creator Dave Arneson.



Rest in Peace, sir.

La Quinta Arts Festival 2008 | Coachella Music Festival Lineup 2008

The La Quinta Arts Festival starts in a week and a half (March 13 - 16th), this prestigious event features over 200 artists from around the world showing and selling their craft. This will be the first year without Merv Griffin a HUGE and active supporter of the festival. He died in August of last year and he will be missed by all.

Here is a list of the invited artists.

It should be beautiful weather as usual so I look forward to strolling the grounds and enjoying some supreme artwork.

Every year the Coachella Music (and Arts) Festival (April 25th - 27th) comes to town and plays at the Empire Polo Grounds, it injects a little bit of youth into a valley whose average aged resident is 35 (it used to be higher).

Coachella is essentially the final hurrah before the start of summer sets in. We have a few other events then the long, hot summer falls upon us and we wait it all out until October, that's when the valley wakes up again to the start of the PGA tour.
