Dave Stevens (1955 - 2008)

Very sad day, artist Dave Stevens (Rocketeer and many other comics) has passed away after battling leukemia (semi-privately) for the last few years.

Any fan of Bettie Page had to have been a fan of Dave Stevens.
I met him through his ex-wife Brinke Stevens (I did work for her back in the early 90s) at a Comic Con waaay back and had him sign a copy of the Rocketeer. Brinke was the model for most of his Bettie Page artwork and Dave's Rocketeer was based on his and Brinke's relationship. I didn't know him personally but have to thank Brinke for showing me his fantastic art and making me a fan.

RIP Mr. Stevens

Neutra Home for Sale in Palm Springs!

From The International Herald Tribune...

"Neutra home expected to sell for millions
Palm Springs, California, house may command as much as $25 million at auction
By James S. Russell Bloomberg News
Published: March 5, 2008

In one of the most remarkable architectural photographs ever made, the 1946 Kaufmann Desert House, all horizontal planes and thin supports, glows against a backdrop of mountains at twilight.
The photo - taken a year after the Richard Neutra masterpiece in Palm Springs, California, was built for a department-store tycoon - shows the house in pristine condition. Yet over the years, it slipped into disrepair and not long ago was considered a teardown.
In May, Christie's International hopes it will command as much as $25 million at auction.
Christie's is gambling that the house's extraordinary pedigree will move it into the realm of art rather than real estate. Otherwise, its tract-house size (five bedrooms, 3,200 square feet) and unglitzy appointments (small bedrooms, ranch-house-style closets) would preclude such a stratospheric valuation. Only massive, super-luxurious estates charge this kind of price in Palm Springs.
Christie's senior vice president of 20th-century art, Joshua Holdeman, repositions the Kaufmann as "an iconic cultural product that happens to be a piece of architecture." It is an intriguing spin. After all, habitability sets architecture apart from visual art, a distinction that is critical in the case of the Kaufmann. Its value significantly relies on the powerful influence it exerted on U.S. lifestyles.

Neutra designed the house for Edgar J. Kaufmann, the Pittsburgh department-store executive who commissioned the world-famous Fallingwater from Frank Lloyd Wright. Anchored by a hefty sandstone chimney, the California house's interlocking, strongly horizontal planes in plaster, glass and sand-colored concrete pinwheel in four directions.
Skinny steel-tube supports barely interrupt the long wood ceiling planes that draw the eye outward to views of the rugged desert scattered with rocks and prickly cacti. Adjustable metal louvers the size of airplane-wing flaps cut the hot winds while filtering daylight and views.
Neutra made walls disappear with giant plate-glass doors that slide effortlessly on impossibly thin frames. In this way, he dissolves the threshold between inside and out, creating a seamless flow from house to garden and pool.
In the American mind, the architectural photographer Julius Shulman's endlessly reproduced twilight image helped shape a vision of California as a healthful paradise of informal living. (Shulman, still active at 97, is the subject of an exhibition, including the Kaufmann House image, at the Palm Springs Art Museum through May 4.)
Neutra's masterly use of space and materials can be fully appreciated thanks to the sellers, Beth and Brent Harris. The much-altered house had languished on the market for years. Priced as a teardown, they picked it up for the cost of the land.
Working with the Los Angeles architect Marmol Radziner & Associates, they took five years to restore the house as closely as possible to its original condition, down to the cork floors and ordinary bath hardware. The breezeway between the main house and the bedroom wing has been restored - a triumph of light and shadow, if hard to appreciate on a chilly winter morning.
The extraordinary result spurred the craze for mid-century modern furniture and homes. Palm Springs is rapidly becoming a pilgrimage destination for aficionados of '50s sputnik light fixtures and butterfly rooflines.
The buyer is unlikely to tamper with Neutra's design because that would reduce its value as art. Potential bidders, according to Tyler Morgan, the local agent for Christie's who showed me the property, "include people who collect architecture as art."
This rare breed is willing to snap up houses that require curators, not just housekeepers. Iconic modernist houses, like Mies van Der Rohe's Farnsworth House near Chicago, have sold for millions at auction.
"I hope the price is shockingly huge," the architect Leo Marmol said in an interview. Yes, he's self-interested, but he's making a big-picture point. A willingness to pay top dollar for architecture would help business owners and bankers see that design per se adds value. After all, you can build an entire museum wing for the price of a Picasso.
I want Marmol to be right, yet the Kaufmann house can speak as more than a work of art. I hope it will be lived in, by new owners, scholars-in-residence, architectural tourists or in some other way. You can visit a painting in a museum, yet this house cannot be experienced fully except through the day's changing light and long desert evenings shared with friends.
James S. Russell is Bloomberg's U.S. architecture critic. "

The house should be considered art and not another cut-out home. This was a truly unique period in architecture and what little of it exists should be preserved. We have so many excellent examples here in the desert and it would be a shame to lose one.

More Local Stuff

Today the Palm Springs Museum of Art acquired 543 photographs as a gift from an anonymous donor. The photographs range from the mid 19th centurey through to the late 20th century and includes photos from Eugene Atget, Harry Callahan, Julia Margaret Cameron, Lyonel Feininger, Francis Frith, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston.

Currently there is an exhibit of Palm Springs' Modernist Architecture images by Julius Shulman, through May 4. Palm Springs boasts one of the largest collections of Modernist Architecture in the world.

Also on tap for exhibition is the much anticipated Robert Mapplethorpe photographic portraits coming in January of 2009.

The Palm Springs Art Museum has well over 50,000 photographic images in it's collection, 30,000 of which are celebrity oriented, 18,000 of which are desert landscape. We (appreciators) are looking forward much more varied collections in the future.

La Quinta Arts Festival 2008 | Coachella Music Festival Lineup 2008

The La Quinta Arts Festival starts in a week and a half (March 13 - 16th), this prestigious event features over 200 artists from around the world showing and selling their craft. This will be the first year without Merv Griffin a HUGE and active supporter of the festival. He died in August of last year and he will be missed by all.

Here is a list of the invited artists.

It should be beautiful weather as usual so I look forward to strolling the grounds and enjoying some supreme artwork.

L.

Every year the Coachella Music (and Arts) Festival (April 25th - 27th) comes to town and plays at the Empire Polo Grounds, it injects a little bit of youth into a valley whose average aged resident is 35 (it used to be higher).
Coachella is essentially the final hurrah before the start of summer sets in. We have a few other events then the long, hot summer falls upon us and we wait it all out until October, that's when the valley wakes up again to the start of the PGA tour.

More familiarity...

Last night I watched Slipstream directed by Anthony Hopkins (one of my favs since I first saw him in Magic...in the theatres....yikes). I have been desparately (ok, not that desparately) trying to catch up on films I've wanted to see over the last few years. The combination of AH as director and star was too good to pass up.

Sooooo, about half way through there's a shot in the desert (not where they are "filming") and I recognize it from the skyline alone. They're playing golf at *Bighorn Golf Club which is literally a stone's throw from me. The view of the mountainous skyline (which includes Mount Eisenhower, the highest point there between the actors) to the east is the very same I see from my workshop everyday. And the second pic shows the view, mountains to the south, from my front yard.

It wasn't the first time I'd spotted a familiar place in films but this one was really close to home. The odd thing was that I'd just watched It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and saw they too filmed just up the hill from us (looooong before we lived here ;)). It looks slightly different, not much but slightly (bottom pic is from the film). I believe they were trying to pass off Palm Desert as Israel.

When coming from Comic Con in San Diego each year we take the route that goes through the San Jacinto/Santa Rosa mountains, the first place one sees as they've come off the mountain is Bighorn...the next is ours. Both are to the left of that large cluster of boulders to the left of the pic...

:)

L

*This place is chock-full of celebs and sports stars...and lotsa other loaded people. ...the "apartments" start at $2m. :p

The Mighty Boosh

I've been watching The Mighty Boosh over the last few weeks and am down to the last series (3). About half way through the second to the last episode I spot a familiar face.
During Celebration IV (Los Angeles 2007) a group of us went to Hollywood to check out the weirdness. The group included official Star Wars artists, Cynthia Cummens, Joe Corroney, Justin Chung, David Rabbitte and Jake Steele; Writer Abel Peña and good friends Jeff and Ed.
See pics below...

Steve Gerber 1947 - 2008

More sad news...

Howard the Duck Creater Steve Gerber Dies

On February 16th, 2008, writer and creator of Howard the Duck died at a Las Vegas, Nevada, hospital from complications relating to pulmonary fibrosis.

Gerber's bio (from his official site):

"Best known as the creator of Howard the Duck, Steve Gerber has established a reputation for working at the cutting edge of comics. In a career spanning more than thirty years, Steve has put words in the mouths of virtually every major character in the comic book world — from Superman to Scooby Doo — and his work has appeared under the imprint of almost every major publisher in the field. He has also written extensively in animation and television, and even has a computer book to his credit.
Steve's other comics creations include Nevada (Vertigo Press); Void Indigo (Epic Comics); Sludge (Malibu Comics); Destroyer Duck (Eclipse Comics and Image Comics); Stewart the Rat (Eclipse Comics); A. Bizarro (DC Comics); as well as Foolkiller , Suburban Jersey Ninja She-Devils, and Omega the Unknown (co-created with Mary Skrenes), all published by Marvel Comics. His runs on Marvel’s Man-Thing and Defenders titles and his Phantom Zone miniseries for DC are considered comic book classics. Steve also wrote, edited, and supervised the production of Marvel’s celebrated KISS comic book, based on the goth-glam rock band.
In 1998, Toons magazine asked its readers to vote for the Top 25 animated series of all time. Steve served as chief story editor on two of those series — G.I. Joe (Sunbow Productions) and Dungeons & Dragons (Marvel Productions) — and won an Emmy for his work as staff writer on a third, The Batman/Superman Adventures (WB Animation). Steve also co-created and story edited the animated cult favorite Thundarr the Barbarian for Ruby-Spears Productions.
In collaboration with Beth Slick, Gerber co-authored BBSs for Dummies (IDG Press), a lighthearted manual on computer telecommunications, and an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Steve's newest work is Hard Time, published by DC Comics."

Blue Line Pro Cards - American Cancer Society Charity

My contributions to the Blue Line Charity Event. Thank you! Leah

From the editor of Blue Line Pro:

" Blue Line is sponsoring a Sketch Card Gallery Exhibit on March 8, 2008 at Comics2Games in Florence, Kentucky. This show is open to all artists. Blue Line will send sketch cards for the artist to do their illustrations and Comics2Games will set up the display for the event. The Exhibit will be up all day with a get-together with some of the artists from 5 to 8pm that evening. Then, after the show, the cards will be auctioned on eBay for one week with the proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society.

Cancer has touched the lives and families of so many artists and writers, faced with fighting this terrible disease. So, consider taking the time to illustrate a few cards for a good cause. Blue Line is supplying the sketch cards for the show and will mail blank cards to artists upon request to illustrate for this event.

The cards can feature most any characters (including your own) .

For more information to contact Comics2Games at (859)647-7568 you can contact Jeremy Bell at jeremyb@comics2cars.com on how you or an artist you know can participate in the event for this worthy cause!

Pass the word along to all the message boards, groups, studios. companies, bulletin boards and other outlets you know.
